Some facts about Abraham Lincoln you may or may not know.

Abraham Lincoln lived from February 12th 1809 to April 15th 1865. He was born in Hardin County Kentucky and was named after his granddad. He later moved to Illinois where he became involved in politics and became a lawyer. He was assassinated at the age of fifty six.

Lincoln’s biological mother died from milk sickness. The story is that his mother drank milk from a cow that had previously eaten poisonous mushrooms. The poison was passed to her in the milk.

After Abraham Lincolns mother died, his father remarried a widow. Lincoln became very close to his new step mom.

Although he did attend a Baptist church as a youth, Lincoln never officially declared his membership to any specific church.

Mary Todd Lincoln, the first woman to agree to Abe’s marriage proposal, came from a very wealthy family. Apparently her family did not agree with her decision to marry Lincoln because he did not grow up in a wealthy family.

He was the first Republican to be elected president. He was elected president two times in a row but was assassinated before finishing his second term.

He was the tallest U.S president ever towering in at 6 feet 4 inches. That was quite taller than most men at that time.

His first vice president was Hannibal Hamlin. Hamlin earned the second greatest number of votes during Lincoln’s first election win. During the next election, Hamlin was replaced by Andrew Johnson as the new top Democrat candidate. Andrew Johnson became president immediately following Lincoln’s assassination.

He was preceded by James Buchanan and succeeded by Andrew Johnson, each of whom were Democrats. In those days, the winner of the presidential election became president and the second place person became vice president. They were typically from different political parties.

America created a national banking system while Lincoln was in office. With the enacting of the National Banking Act in 1863, the US finally had a standardized currency.

No other presidents before Abraham Lincoln had been assassinated while in office. Lincoln was the first one.

Historians say that Abe suffered with bouts of depression at various times in his life. Historians|They also say that he like to tell jokes.

Previous American presidents were clean shaven or had sideburns. He was the first president to have a beard while running the United States.

Lincoln said he had a dream about his death. One week before he died, he had a dream where somebody was crying in the White House. In the dream, he asked a man in the room who had died. The man said it was the President. Lincoln looked in the coffin and saw his own face on the corpse.

Many modern day presidents have dogs for pets. Lincoln was also a dog lover. He also owned horses, cats, and a turkey. That might seem a little weird today.
