Selecting The Right Rod And Reel For Salt Water Fishing

When selecting fishing gear keep in mind that there are many choices out on the market. There are many kinds of rods, reels and fishing accessories out there giving you a limitless number of possibilities even in combinations. In order not to get lost looking for fishing gear you should have an idea about what you want to do, what kind of fishing you intend to do. The first thing you need to decide is whether you will be fishing in salt or fresh water. Then decide if it is going to be heavy or medium tackle or even fly fishing.

If salt water fishing is the fishing you intend to be doing then you have narrowed down your choices regarding equipment a bit. The next thing you need to decide so that you even have less choices is whether you will be doing deep or shallow water fishing. This important to know when selecting a rod, a reel and all the accessories you will need.

When doing salt water fishing in relatively shallow water you will need medium to heavy fishing gear. If you are fishing in the Gulf of Mexico for example you will be going after emigrational species such as Spanish Mackerel, King Mackerel, and Cobia.

Fishing in salt water for Spanish Mackerel for example requires a medium light to medium action rod at a minimum as the fish can reach a weight of seven or eight pounds in schools of large fish. The reel you choose should be something along the lines of a Abu Garcia 7000 Inshore Classic or Abu Garcia Revo Toro 50 HS.

Spinning reels should be selected if you intend to be fishing along the coast. For coastal fishing a reel that has about two hundred yards and 10 to 12 pounds of line. A good tip is to tie a steel leader perhaps 12-14 inches to prevent fish from biting the line.

If you will be fishing by the coast on shallow waters for King Mackerel then you will be needing a heavier set of fishing gear. Just because King Mackerel is a considerably larger type of fish. This type of fish can reach 20 lb in weight and you will need a heavier rod and line.

A King Mackerel will need much more than just 200 yards of line. They are fast and heavy and can draw that line of yours in a few seconds just by swimming away. The rod length you should be going for should be 7 to 9 feet in length. A good reel for this job is the Abu Garcia Revo Toro 50.

Abu Garcia reels are good for salt water fishing just because of their durability and relatively low cost. Finding an Abu Garcia reel for salt water fishing at a good price is not a big deal.
