1. Choose First Course Options Carefully: Most dinners come with a soup or salad to begin with. Choose this course carefully, when choosing soup, always choose vegetable based soups over creamy soups. When opting for a salad, always ask for your dressing to be served on the side, and request fat filled toppings like cheese and bacon to be left off. Ask for a low fat or fat free dressing to cut down even more fat and calories. If the restaurant does not offer lower fat versions, oil and vinegar is a great alternative.

2. Drink Plenty Of Water: Make water your only beverage choice. Most people do not realize how many calories their beverages actually contain. You can add hundreds of empty calories by consuming sugary drinks, sodas, and alcohol. Get your calories from your meal instead. Keep the water coming throughout your meal.

3. Opt For Smaller Portions: Portion sizes are the main problem when eating out. People have a tendency to eat everything that is put in front of them. Restaurants usually provide portions that are far too large, which can be quite detrimental to your dieting progress. Asking for a smaller portion size can take care of this issue. 5. Make Good Vegetable Choices: Choose steamed, or fresh vegetables sides. Stay away from fried veggies, or veggies that are covered in fattening sauces. If choosing a potato side, pick a basic baked potato with margarine, and as much as you may love it, stay away from sour cream and butter.

6. Share Dessert: It can be quite awkward to be the only person not having dessert or something sweet after dinner. Ask to share a small dessert with a member of your party so you do not feel left out. Remember, you are sharing dessert, so keep your share under control.

7. Plan Ahead: If you are going to a new restaurant that you are not familiar with, stop in ahead of time and pick up a menu. This will give you time to familiarize yourself with the menu and choose your dinner option without pressure.
