Interview Bloopers And How To Correct Them

Posted By Carole Martin, The Interview Coach on May 28, 2009 @ 7:31 am
by Carole Martin, The Interview Coach

Im sure youve sat through movie or TV bloopers at the end of shows and laughed at the mistakes the actors make during the filming of the show. If I could put together a film with bloopers that people make in interviews it might seem funny as well ” but not when it happens in real life - to you!

I’m going to help you avoid your interview bloopers. First you become aware of what some of the pitfalls of interviewing are and then you prepare and practice so that it wont happen to you. Here are 10 of those very pitfalls to watch for.

1. Do you catch yourself slouching, fidgeting or looking away? These are poor non-verbal communication actions

Its about demonstrating confidence - standing straight, making eye contact, and connecting with a good, firm handshake. That first impression can be a great beginning, or a quick ending to your interview.

2. Being “over casual” for the job or company

It is important to look professional and well groomed, above all. Todays casual dress codes in the office, do not give you permission to dress as they do when you interview. Whether you wear a suit or something less formal depends on the company culture and the position you are seeking. If possible, call and find out what the company dress code is before the interview.

3. Not listening to the interviewer ” only worrying about what you are going to say

Observe your interviewer and match that style and pace. From the very beginning of the interview, your interviewer is giving you information, either directly or indirectly. If you are not listening ” turning up your intuitive - you are missing a major opportunity. Good communication skills include listening and letting the person know you heard what they said.

4. Do you “tell it all” to the interviewer? Talking too much ” even if its not relevant

Prepare for the interview by reading through the job posting; matching your skills with the requirements of the position, and relating only that information. Telling the interviewer more than they need to know could be a fatal mistake. When you have not prepared ahead of time you may tend to ramble, sometimes talking yourself right out of the job.

5. Your new best friend is NOT the interviewer - being over-familiar

The interview is a professional meeting to talk business. This is not about making a new friend. The level of familiarity should mimic the demeanor of the interviewer. It is important to bring energy and enthusiasm to the interview, and to ask questions, but not to over-step your place as a candidate looking for a job.

6. Using inappropriate language ” you guys know what I mean

Be aware of any inappropriate slang words or references to age, race, religion, politics, or sexual preferences ” these topics could get the door slammed very quickly. Its a given that you should use professional language during the interview.

7. Acting like a “know it all” ” being overconfident ” king of the hill

There is a fine balance between confidence, professionalism, and modesty. Attitude plays a key role in your interview success. Even if youre putting on a performance to demonstrate your ability, over-doing is as bad, if not worse, as being too reserved.

8. Not answering the question asked ” jumping in without thinking

When an interviewer asks for an example of a time, you did something, she is seeking a sample of your past behavior. If you fail to relate a specific example, you not only dont answer the question, but you miss an opportunity to prove your ability and tell about your skills.

9. Not asking questions ” this is a missed opportunity you will live to regret

When asked if they have any questions, the majority of candidates answer, No. Wrong answer! It is extremely important to ask questions. It demonstrates an interest in what goes on in the company. It also gives you the opportunity to find out if this is the right place for you. The best questions come from listening to what is asked during the interview, and asking for additional information.

10. Looking desperate ” I just have to have this job, please hire me!

Its a tough job market, and you need a job! When you interview with the Please, please, hire me, approach you appear desperate and less confident. Maintain the three Cs during the interview: Cool, Calm, and Confident! You know you can do the job, ” now, make sure the interviewer believes you can, too.

In the interview you want to be as prepared and polished as possible. Everybody makes mistakes ” thats what makes us human. We can laugh at ourselves a great deal of the time when we get tongue-tied or forget someones name ” even our spouses. If you do make a mistake during your interview, consider it a human error and learn from the experience. In the meantime do your homework and get prepared.

Making A CV Sample Relevant For You

Finding a CV sample on the Internet is not difficult. However, figuring out how to adapt these samples for your own use can be much more difficult.

In this article, we will provide useful information on how you can adapt a CV sample to make it relevant for you.

The first step you use is to begin your search by using the name of your field when you search for samples of CVs. The results from this more specific search will be more focused in your own field. Another advantage of this method is you will find CVs which demonstrate the most important skills in your field.

Based on this information, you will find it is not at all difficult to make slight modifations which make your own experiences and skills really shine. Company websites are another great place to search for eamples of CVs you can use as a starting point. Here you will find real CVs from employees of the company. Although these CVs are not necessarily samples, they can still be used for the purpose of learning how to format a CV and which types of skills to illustrate.

Regardless of the fact that you are using a CV sample to create your own CV, you should always take care to ensure everything on your own CV is truthful and accurate. You may think it is a good idea to copy information from a sample directly but this is not a good idea. It can also result in many problems for you if the employer hires you with unrealistic expectations about your capabilities. A CV that overstates you abilities will result in your employer assuming you can handle responsibilities you may not be capable of handling.

When The Job Search Is Feeling Hopeless

Posted By Carole Martin, The #1 Interview Coach in America on May 25, 2009 @ 4:28 am
by Carole Martin, The #1 Interview Coach in America

It’s been rough going during the past year, and then some, for those who have lost jobs for whatever reason. If you’ve been looking for a job for more than a few weeks you may be experiencing the feelings of defeat and despair, not to mention the urge to give up. Interviewing with no second interviews or offers coming in begins to wear thin - very fast.

If you are feeling down during this process, here are some tips to keep your spirits up. When you are feeling down, come back and re-read these tips and be sure to practice each and every one of them.

1. Don’t give up.

You may have heard some of these stories before but they remain inspirational.

Walt Disney’s Mickey Mouse series failed to become an instant hit, but he kept trying and in 1928 he added sound and made it an electrifying success.

Milton Hershey failed several businesses before he became the “Chocolate King” and built Hershey town. He even went bankrupt in his first business venture.

Thomas Edison patented 1,093 inventions in his lifetime, but it took him 10,000 attempts to make an electric light bulb work.

Herb Cain began his journalism career in 1938 writing for the San Francisco Chronicle. 58 years later he received a special award from the Pulitzer Prize board.

Milton Hershey failed several businesses before he became the “Chocolate King” and built Hershey town. He even went bankrupt in his first business venture.

“Most of the important things in the world have been accomplished by people who have kept on trying when there seemed to be no help at all.” ~~ Dale Carnegie

The challenge is to pick yourself up after a failure and move forward. That is what will set you apart from “the pack.” These great “successes-after-failure stories” couldn’t have happened if these people hadn’t continued to pursue their dreams. Anyone can give up — that’s easy!

2. Practice controlling stress

Job opportunities can come your way at the most unusual time and place. Study after study published continues to indicate that “networking” is still the number one way to land a job. Take advantage of every opportunity to be with groups of people. This encompasses everything from your child’s soccer game to a Chamber of Commerce event. Don’t forget to use the social networking sites available online to reconnect with your colleagues and those with common interests. Sites such as Facebook and LinkedIn. Be sure to be very professional when using these sources.

Informal networking can happen at any moment and when you least expect it. An example is of a man waiting for a bus. He struck up a conversation with another man also waiting for the bus and ended up getting a job lead and an eventual offer.

3. There are going to be ups and downs

Everything looks hopeful one moment with a job prospect ahead, and then it changes to dark and dismal in the next moment when you receive a rejection. Accepting the fact that this is a stressful time and that a great deal of it is out of your control will help you put things into perspective. It’s not unusual to have highs and lows during your job search. Some days you may even feel like you’re on an emotional roller coaster.

4. It’s okay to fail, let it go.

Stress becomes a problem when it begins to affect your lifestyle and health. Are you waking up in the middle of the night or skipping meals because you are feeling really down or upset? You may need to talk to someone who is a professional to get some advice about relaxation techniques. Park and Recreation departments in most cities offer relaxation courses of some kind — yoga, pilates, aerobics, or stress control exercises — for a nominal fee, that could assist you in getting back on balance.

5. Don’t wait until you get the call to prepare yourself for the interview

It is important to identify what makes you unique and what added value you can bring to the position. Reading through the job posting you are applying for and getting a sense of what it will take to do this job will help you look at the process from the interviewer’s point of view.

You want to let the interviewer know that you are the “solution to the problem,” and the best person for the job. Preparing ahead of the interview will give you a definite advantage. What this means is getting focused about what you want the interviewer to know about you. You are presenting a picture of you with words.

6. Prepare yourself

Preparing ahead of the interview will give you a definite advantage. What this means is getting focused about what you want the interviewer to know about you. You are presenting a picture of you with words.

7. Remember - you are not alone

Remember, it is an extremely tight job market and that for every job opening there are four or five equally qualified candidates standing in line behind you. It is essential that you are prepared, focused, and able to tell the interviewer what makes you unique and why you are the best person for the job.

Keeping upbeat is a part of your job right now. When you begin to give into the dark side you will project that to others. You want to stay as upbeat as possible, particularly while interviewing. Bringing confidence and energy to the interview are the two most important ingredients to connecting with the interviewer.

Your Best Asset is Yourself

by Scott Darrohn

In these trying times that a good many of us are experiencing, just having a job has become our best asset. Only a few years ago people were looking for larger bonuses, higher salaries, and whatever they could to capitalize on a growing economy. But now the tides have taken a serious turn.

Many of the same workers right now would be happy to make a small percentage of the salaries they were not happy with. But, due to large layoffs and downsizing of companies throughout the country they are left with nothing.

Many people should feel worth in the fact that they are still employed while so many unfortunates are not. Things may be tough, but at least your largest asset, your job is still putting bread on the table. Be proud and feel secure in knowing that you have stability and an asset such as yourself that you can rely on.

While a few years ago many people were refinancing to get the car of their dreams or buying that vacation home that they simply could not afford. Today, things are far different. Instead of taking a tour of Europe many families this summer will be going on a good old family camping trip.

So now it is back to the basics! Where we can create our own fortunes and misfortunes based on our best asset, ourselves.

The Job Situation For Teenagers

Posted By Stoney Graham on May 23, 2009 @ 3:01 am
by Stoney Graham

Teenagers that are 15 years old are rarely thought of when considering the bad economic situation. It is usually when teens turn 16 that they start looking for jobs and this might have something to do with them wanting a car and needing dating money. For those who are 15 year olds, it might be a little harder to find employers that will take a chance on them.

Teenagers that are 15 will have little job experience and if a company has lots of applications for its jobs, they might go to those that are older. It could be easier if you are that young to get a job in a small town where everybody knows one another. If you live in a small town, you are friends with a lot more people and it imight be easier to help one another out and make job connections for young kids.

Finding jobs for teens at this time is hard because of the economic situation. Teens are usually the last ones to be hired because the have the least experience. For a teen, it always pays to know people and have as many connections as possible. This will give those that do the best chance of getting the few jobs that will be open. Of course there are still a couple of months between now and summer so the job outlook could change between then and now.

Another option for teens is to go on the Internet to see what opportunities exist there. Unfortunately online jobs for teens aren’t a much better prospect as most everything requires you to be at least 18. The only thing the internet can help teens do is to apply online for jobs and search for jobs. Learning how to use the online job sites is a skill that will serve them well down the road.

Other than getting lucky and being accepted for a job with a real company, an enterprising teen can work to create his or her own job online or offline. Teenagers often know as much or more about computers than their parents and if they can learn how to teach these computer skills, they might be able to generate some sort of a side income. Teens know how to communicate online and with this skill they can also get the word out that they are for hire. They might also make connections in their neighborhoods to find local work like mowing lawns and weeding gardens.

Personal Development Will Bring You Success

Posted By Ina Hikmatullah on May 15, 2009 @ 7:18 am
by Ina Hikmatullah

Heres a little piece of philosophy that will probably make a lot of sense, especially if youre scientifically-minded. If you dont change a behavior, that behavior is going to continue bringing the same results. Its simple! Its true!

If you dont change anything, of course you can expect to get the same results! Thats a claim that can be supported by science.

One of the more popular theories in the world of personal development has to do with NLP, or neuro-linguistic programming. To oversimplify it, its a discipline based on the theory that we as people develop ideas about ourselves through our experiences. As such, if we change certain negative ideas about ourselves, we can overcome these self-imposed limitations to become happy, healthy individuals, and to meet our respective goals.

How do we do that? Heres an example. Successful people tend to think of themselves in positive ways, even before they experience great success. Their personal development has brought them to the point where they can find the confidence within themselves to make their dreams possible, no matter what the odds. They do this by visualizing what they want, and then staying focused on that goal. The let their small successes as they reach for the larger successes be their guide as they continue to strive toward their dream.

Another good example of successful behavior, and one that ties in very well with the last point, is problem-solving behavior. People who have achieved this in their personal development dont run away from problems. They run THROUGH them, which serves to strengthen their confidence. People who run away from their problems tend to have a very low sense of self worth, and as a result, they let their problems overwhelm them.

Dont be that person. Always remember, the definition of success is the overcoming of adversity. That means that in order to be successful, by definition, you are going to solve some problems. Probably a lot! There is no success without resistance!

One more way to boost self-confidence is to practice an attitude of gratitude. People who do this basically remember to take time each day to remind themselves of what they have, and what they can do with it. Lots of times, when we are in uncharted territory, it becomes easy for us to believe that we are lost and wasting time. Its easy to believe that we are in way over our heads. Just relax, and go back to looking at all the reasons you should succeed, instead of reasons that you should fail. Remember, if you focus on obstacles, youre almost guaranteed to let them get you down.

Appreciate your friends, your family, and if that isnt an option for you, appreciate where you are right now and what it took to get there. Chances are, things could be a lot worse right now, and as a result of an action that YOU took, you avoided that other, more negative scenario. Successful people very often feel grateful for what they have, and their positive energy only creates more success.

Everything that has happened to you, from the good fortune to the bad fortune that you were able to learn from. (One big step in your personal development could also be not to look at any experience as completely negative.) What you have is a recipe for what makes you a unique individual, especially equipped to fulfill your own potential. Youre undoubtedly going to have a list that makes you happy, to realize that within you is the ability to take charge of your own personal development and move forward. Thats the first step in healthy personal development, the kind that creates success.
