Move Over, I’m Coming Up

Posted By Twyla on March 3, 2008 @ 5:02 pm

I have been working for a local newspaper company for a few years now and I finally feel like I am moving up in the company. When I first started my job here, I was put in charge of typing out the Long Island personals. Not a very glamorous job, I admit, but it was a job and I had hoped to move up in the world before too long.

After about a year, I did move up. All the way up to the Long Island classifieds. Way more glamorous, I know. But, it was more hours and better pay. And, frankly, I was tired of hearing about all the divorced white females looking for companionship. I mean, who finds their soul mate by reading an ad in the paper.

I have just been promoted to the Long Island business directory. I actually really like this one, as it is not all office work. I actually get to go out and talk to local businesses and write short articles about new businesses in town. Who knows, maybe in twenty years, I will actually be writing the news.

Just Another Weekend at the Apartment

Posted By Admin on February 9, 2008 @ 9:14 am

Well, it is Saturday again - boy how time flies.  It sure seemed like this week went by way too fast, and I didn’t really get much done.  But, now that it is the weekend, and the office is closed, it is time for me to some work.

On the agenda today is a little bit of paper work - which should be easy.  After that, I just need to go shovel the walks (which should end up being more like a sweep - there wasn’t that much snow last night).  But later on this afternoon I need to do some landlord tenant referencing.

You see, we have a few vacant units on the premises and we need them to be filled.  We have had an ad in the paper for the past week and have had a few people come down to check out the suites and apply to become tenants.

Now, all I have to do is check tenant referencing before they can be allowed to move in.  I usually do this in the evenings during the week, but I just didn’t have any time this week.  So, that means I will be calling in the afternoon and after supper to see if we can get some good tenants to move in.

Fighting Traffic Violations from the Bronx

Posted By Twyla on January 14, 2008 @ 6:49 pm

I am proud to say that I am a Bronx traffic violation lawyer. I have lived in the Bronx my whole life and I couldn’t be more proud of where I came from and where I ended up. I can honestly say that I have not heard of too many lawyers coming from the Bronx.

Most of the people I went to law school with ended up being Manhattan traffic violation attorneys. They all thought that was more in their league than going to the Bronx. I had to disagree. To me this was home and where I belonged. I also thought it was ok that they did not want to be here, as I would have less competition.

In the end, we are all NYC traffic violation attorneys and can work out of any jurisdiction that we want to. I am still very good friends with some of them and I do occasionally work with some of them right here in the Bronx.

Fun at Lunchtime

Posted By Twyla on December 23, 2007 @ 7:28 pm

I can’t complain a lot about my job.  It is great, with good perks and in all honesty it is fun.  The boss isn’t too bad either and really makes the job fun.

But what I really like the most about our work is lunchtime - it is the "fun-est" part of the day.  You see, each day, we have competitions to see who is the best at a selection of online games.

Last week, we were all competing for the best casino games player.  I won at poker, but didn’t do so well at roulette.  By the end of the week, there was a tie between three of us workers.  This week, we decided that it would be the tie breaker.

I am definitely looking forward to the challenge.  You see, we will be playing a little Donkey Kong and Sonic.  These classic games I played as a kid, and as long as I am not too rusty, it should be okay.  We’ll just have to see how good my competitors are.

I just can’t wait until Monday’s lunchtime - that is when the fun for the week begins.

Just Me and My Kids

Posted By Twyla on @ 6:41 pm

I am a single mom in Las Vegas and I have to admit that I work way too much and still don’t bring home enough pay. My kids are wonderful and have accepted their situation with thankful hearts and much love for me. I was recently promoted and given a nice bonus at work and I wanted to do something nice for my kids.

My boss heard about this and told me he could get me some hefty Las Vegas hotel discounts if I wanted to just get away with them for a weekend. I was so thankful and he told me to look for Circus Circus offer codes and Mandalay Bay Discounts online. He was sure that these were good places to go with kids.

After checking both of them out, I decided that the Circus Circus Las Vegas was a better choice.

I found that I could get coupons for the amusement park and a comedy show for free, if I booked for three nights. Three nights was a bit much for my budget, so I declined. The next day, when I got to work, there was an envelope on my desk containing vouchers for the Circus Circus Las Vegas  and coupons for the amusement park and a comedy show. Isn’t my boss great?

Business Software Requirements

Posted By Admin on December 18, 2007 @ 2:16 pm

I was able to sit in on the brainstorming session to determine what we needed in a business software solution for our company.  You see, we wanted the software to do everything from controlling our ecommerce website to replacing the recruitment firm that we use.  We really needed it to do pretty much everything - but we had to make our requirements a little more specific.

We determined that website control was essential for the software.  It would interface with our inventory control module to be able to only offer products we had in stock.  We also needed the software to pre-qualify potential candidates through their resume that they would submit to our site.

There has also been some talk about how we can get rid of our HR consultant and depend on the software to distribute training materials and take care of payroll.  Not only would this save us money by eliminating another expense, but it would give us customizable reports such as being able to compare our sales to our payroll expenses.

The programmers were taking notes and are going to be getting back to us in a couple of weeks with a working prototype.  It will be neat to see what the finished product looks like.

Starting a Job Search with Resume Writing

Posted By Admin on November 20, 2007 @ 11:29 pm

I am in dire need of a job, and there are a few ads in the local newspaper that I have looked at that seem interesting.  You see, I don’t want some run of the mill job serving coffee or fries, I want something challenging that will help me grow as an individual.

With that in mind, I’ve decided that it was time to learn how to write a resume.  In the past, I had used an online resume builder to make my resume, but for the jobs I want to apply for now, a cookie cutter resume just won’t cut it.

Earlier today, I went to the library and picked up a book on how to make a resume.  I have read almost half of it today, and at the same time that I am reading the book, I take breaks to work on the resume.  I am using the book as a reference, and I am tweaking the resume accordingly.

I want to get the resume done tonight, as some of the jobs have a deadline of tomorrow at noon for applications - I better get to it!

Getting to an Interview

Posted By Admin on November 12, 2007 @ 2:37 pm

I have been considering switching jobs.  As most of you know I took a job just a short while ago and it has been going okay.  I have had a couple of problems scheduling work around exams - and my current employer has not been very good about it.

So, I have decided that it is time to change jobs.  With my schedule being as busy as it is, I have not had time to write my resume - so I need to find an alternative.

I have been talking to my friends and they suggested that I hire a certified resume writer to do it for me.  These people are trained to create a resume that can get you to an interview with ease.  For me, this will be the best route - I really don’t have time to do it myself.

A quick search online was all it took to find a resume writing service.  I have contacted them and I am waiting to get my completed resume back.  Now, all I need is some dress clothes… anyone have any ideas?
